How to Prepare for the dMAT General Academic Module

For affected APS India applicants, the dMAT combines the Core Module with the General Academic Module.

The official description emphasises academic problem solving, transfer and application. This means preparation should not be limited to memorising lists of facts. You need to practise extracting information, selecting a method and applying it in an unfamiliar academic context.

What “general academic” means

The module is intended to assess whether you can work with a typical academic problem and answer related questions.

A question may require you to:

  • interpret a short passage;
  • identify a relevant relationship;
  • read a table, graph or diagram;
  • perform a calculation;
  • compare competing explanations;
  • draw a conclusion supported by the evidence; or
  • apply a general principle to a new situation.

The surface topic may be unfamiliar. The core skill is using the information provided.

The four-stage method

Use the same framework across different academic contexts.

1. Identify the task

Before processing every detail, ask what the question wants:

  • a calculation;
  • an inference;
  • a comparison;
  • an explanation;
  • a missing value; or
  • the strongest supported conclusion.

2. Locate the evidence

Mark the passage, table or figure that directly relates to the task.

Do not treat every number or sentence as equally important.

3. Apply the method

Carry out the required reasoning:

  • calculate;
  • compare;
  • eliminate;
  • infer; or
  • test the options.

4. Verify the answer

Check that your answer:

  • uses the correct unit;
  • addresses the exact question;
  • does not go beyond the evidence;
  • is consistent with the data; and
  • is the best option, not merely a plausible statement.

Train academic reading differently

You do not need to read every prompt like a novel.

Use purposeful reading:

  1. Read the question stem.
  2. Identify the information format.
  3. Scan for the relevant section.
  4. Read that section closely.
  5. Return to the answer options.

For dense passages, distinguish between:

  • the main claim;
  • supporting evidence;
  • examples;
  • limitations; and
  • conclusions.

Many incorrect options use words from the passage but change the relationship between them.

Improve data interpretation

When a table or chart appears:

  • read the title;
  • check axes and units;
  • identify the comparison period;
  • note whether values are totals, averages or percentages;
  • look for missing categories;
  • estimate the expected answer range; and
  • calculate only what the question needs.

Do not begin arithmetic before confirming what each number represents.

Practise transfer instead of memorisation

Transfer means applying a familiar reasoning method in a new context.

For example, the same proportional reasoning can appear in:

  • an engineering efficiency problem;
  • an economics index;
  • a business growth table; or
  • a scientific concentration question.

Build a toolkit of general methods:

  • percentages and ratios;
  • rate of change;
  • weighted averages;
  • logical implication;
  • correlation versus causation;
  • evidence strength;
  • unit conversion;
  • reading distributions; and
  • comparing alternatives under constraints.

Use answer options strategically

In a single-choice format, the options are part of the problem.

They can help you:

  • estimate the required precision;
  • identify common unit mistakes;
  • test a proposed value;
  • eliminate unsupported conclusions; and
  • decide whether an exact calculation is necessary.

However, do not choose an option merely because it uses familiar words from the prompt.

Build topic tolerance

Students sometimes panic when a question appears to come from a field they did not study.

Practise with varied contexts deliberately:

  • science;
  • technology;
  • economics;
  • social research;
  • business;
  • environment;
  • public policy; and
  • quantitative academic scenarios.

The goal is not to become an expert in every discipline. It is to remain methodical when the context is unfamiliar.

A weekly General Academic routine

Session 1: passage reasoning

Complete a small set focused on claims, evidence and inference.

Session 2: quantitative application

Practise ratios, percentages, rates and multi-step calculations.

Session 3: data interpretation

Work with tables, charts and short research summaries.

Session 4: mixed timed set

Combine several contexts under time pressure.

Session 5: error review

Rewrite the reasoning for every mistake in one or two sentences.

How to review mistakes

For each wrong answer, identify whether you:

  • misunderstood the question;
  • missed relevant data;
  • used outside knowledge instead of the prompt;
  • performed the wrong calculation;
  • chose a conclusion stronger than the evidence allowed;
  • misread a unit; or
  • ran out of time.

Then solve one new question targeting the same weakness.

Avoid unsupported certainty

Academic reasoning often depends on careful language.

Words such as:

  • always;
  • proves;
  • causes;
  • impossible; and
  • only

make a claim stronger. If the evidence supports only an association or a limited conclusion, an absolute option may be incorrect.

Combine the module with Core preparation

Do not finish the Core Module first and leave General Academic work until the end.

A balanced week should include both:

  • focused Core drills; and
  • at least two General Academic sessions.

This keeps reading, calculation and evidence evaluation active throughout the preparation period.
