Mathematical Equations is one of the three subtests in the dMAT Core module. It does not test advanced mathematics — it tests whether you can reason clearly with simple relationships while the clock is running. A steady method beats mental arithmetic every time.

Read the whole system first
Before touching any numbers, read every equation in the set. The fastest solve almost always comes from noticing a relationship between the equations, not from grinding through one of them. Ask: do two equations share the same variables? Is one a near-copy of another? That first look decides your approach.
Choose your move: add, subtract, or substitute
Most dMAT-style systems yield to one of three moves:
- Add the equations when a variable has opposite signs, so it cancels.
- Subtract one from another when a variable has the same coefficient, so it drops out.
- Substitute when one equation already gives a variable cleanly.
Decide which move applies before you start writing. A common time sink is starting to substitute, realising adding was simpler, and restarting.
Work in small, checkable steps
Write one line per step. It feels slower but it is faster overall, because you never lose your place and you rarely make a sign error. If you find yourself holding three numbers in your head, put them on the page instead.
Verify by back-substitution — quickly
Once you have a value, drop it back into the simplest original equation to confirm it. This one-line check catches the sign slips that cause most wrong answers. If the check fails, you usually only need to re-examine the last step, not the whole problem.
Practise the pattern, not the puzzle
The specific numbers change on test day; the patterns do not.
