The official dMAT website provides model tasks, solutions, solution approaches and videos explaining how the test works on screen. These resources should be the starting point for preparation.
However, simply reading every solution once is not the same as becoming ready to solve unfamiliar questions under time pressure.
This guide shows how to turn the official material into an active training programme.

Why the official materials matter
Unofficial preparation resources can vary in quality. The official materials show the clearest available examples of:
- how instructions are phrased;
- how the digital interface works;
- what a valid task looks like;
- how answers are selected;
- which reasoning steps are expected; and
- how the Core and subject-related modules are presented.
The official site specifically recommends using all available preparation material and warns that no additional detailed information will be provided during the examination.
That makes interface familiarity part of preparation.
Step 1: watch the introduction before solving
Begin with the introductory and task-specific videos.
The available interface topics include:
- Figure Sequences
- Mathematical Equations
- Latin Squares
- Subject Module
While watching, note:
- how you move between tasks;
- how answers are entered or selected;
- what information stays visible;
- whether instructions change between sections; and
- which actions cannot be undone.
Do not watch passively. Pause and describe what you would click next.
Step 2: solve model tasks without looking at the explanation
For every official example:
- Hide the solution.
- Set a reasonable practice timer.
- Write down your reasoning.
- Choose an answer.
- Record your confidence.
- Only then read the official explanation.
This reveals whether you understood the task independently.
Reading a solution first creates false confidence because the correct pattern becomes obvious after it has been shown.
Step 3: compare methods, not only answers
When your answer differs from the official solution, ask:
- Did I misunderstand the instruction?
- Did I use an invalid assumption?
- Did I find a correct but inefficient route?
- Did I make a calculation or transcription error?
- Did I stop checking too early?
Even when your answer is correct, compare the route. The official solution may use a faster or more reliable method.
Step 4: create a task-format notebook
For each task type, keep one page containing:
- the goal of the task;
- the allowed answer format;
- the first three checks you perform;
- common traps;
- your personal skip rule; and
- one worked example in your own words.
This notebook should become shorter as you improve. A clear method can usually be expressed in a few steps.
Step 5: generate variations without copying official tasks
The purpose of model tasks is to teach the format, not to create a memorised answer bank.
Build variations by changing:
- values;
- symbol positions;
- rotation direction;
- row and column constraints;
- units;
- the information shown in a chart; or
- which conclusion must be inferred.
The underlying skill should remain the same while the surface details change.
Do not reproduce or publish official items as your own content.
Step 6: separate interface errors from reasoning errors
During digital practice, classify mistakes into two groups.
Reasoning errors
You misunderstood the relationship, chose the wrong equation or missed a constraint.
Interface errors
You selected the wrong option, overlooked a navigation state or misunderstood how to submit an answer.
Both matter. The official videos are especially valuable for reducing interface errors before test day.
Step 7: revisit examples after a delay
Reattempt official model tasks after one or two weeks.
You are not testing whether you remember the answer. You are checking whether you remember the method.
To reduce memory effects:
- explain the method before looking at the options;
- identify why each wrong option fails; and
- solve a new independent task using the same principle immediately afterwards.
What unofficial practice should add
A good independent prep platform should not replace the official materials. It should extend them with:
- more original questions;
- varied difficulty;
- timed sets;
- detailed explanations;
- error tracking;
- realistic mock navigation; and
- repeated practice of the same skill in new forms.
The official material defines the format. Independent practice builds fluency.
A three-session workflow
Session 1: understand
Watch the official video and solve a small number of examples without time pressure.
Session 2: practise
Complete 10–20 original questions focused on the same skill. Review every error.
Session 3: time
Complete a short timed set. Track accuracy and time. Revisit the most difficult questions afterwards.
Repeat this cycle for each task type.
Avoid these common mistakes
- Treating the official PDFs as a textbook to memorise
- Looking at solutions before attempting tasks
- Ignoring the interface videos
- Assuming unofficial question counts and timings are official
- Copying model questions into public notes
- Completing many questions without an error log
- Practising only your strongest task type
Build familiarity, not dependence
The final goal is to recognise the structure of a new problem and choose a method calmly. You should not need a question to resemble an example word-for-word.
