A Practical Six-Week dMAT Study Plan

Six weeks is enough to make meaningful progress if your preparation is structured. It is not enough to waste the first month collecting resources and leave timed practice for the final days.

The plan below assumes approximately six to nine focused hours per week. Adjust the volume to your starting level, but keep the order: understand, practise, time, review and simulate.

Before week one: take a diagnostic

Start with a short mixed diagnostic covering:

  • Figure Sequences
  • Mathematical Equations
  • Latin Squares
  • General Academic reasoning

Record:

  • accuracy;
  • average time per question;
  • questions left unanswered;
  • confidence before submitting; and
  • the reason for every error.

Do not use the diagnostic only to produce a score. Its purpose is to show where your six weeks should go.

Week 1: learn the task formats

Goal

Understand what each task is asking and develop a repeatable first step.

Core work

For Figure Sequences, practise identifying individual changes such as rotation, movement, count, shading and combination.

For Mathematical Equations, practise translating words and relationships into algebra before solving.

For Latin Squares, practise scanning rows and columns for missing values and writing down constraints systematically.

General Academic work

Read short academic-style prompts and separate:

  • information explicitly given;
  • conclusions supported by the information;
  • assumptions not supported; and
  • calculations required.

Weekly output

  • Three short Core sessions
  • Two General Academic sessions
  • One untimed mixed set
  • A written error log

Accuracy matters more than speed this week.

Week 2: build dependable methods

Goal

Use the same solution process even when questions look unfamiliar.

Create a checklist for each task type.

For example, a Figure Sequence checklist might ask:

  1. What changes across the row?
  2. What changes down the column?
  3. Is the number of elements changing?
  4. Is there rotation or reflection?
  5. Does one cell combine information from others?

A Latin Square checklist might ask:

  1. Which symbols are missing from the row?
  2. Which symbols are missing from the column?
  3. Where do the remaining possibilities overlap?
  4. Can any option be eliminated immediately?

Weekly output

  • Two focused drills for your weakest Core area
  • One drill for each remaining Core area
  • Two General Academic sets
  • One mixed set with generous timing
  • Full review of every error

Week 3: introduce controlled timing

Goal

Learn how time pressure changes your decision-making.

Begin with small timed sets rather than a full mock. Examples:

  • five Figure Sequence questions;
  • five Mathematical Equation questions;
  • five Latin Square questions; or
  • one General Academic passage with its related questions.

After each set, review:

  • whether your method broke down;
  • which questions consumed too much time;
  • whether you guessed too early; and
  • whether you continued working after a sensible skip point.

The two-pass rule

On the first pass, solve questions where the route is reasonably clear.

On the second pass, return to questions requiring longer calculation or pattern testing.

The goal is not to avoid difficult questions forever. It is to stop one question from taking time away from several solvable ones.

Week 4: combine skills and increase difficulty

Goal

Switch between task types without losing accuracy.

Complete mixed practice sessions containing Core and General Academic tasks. Switching matters because the mental process required for a visual pattern is different from the process used for an academic data problem.

Begin revisiting old errors after several days. A question you understand immediately after reading an explanation may still expose a weak skill when attempted later without help.

Weekly output

  • Two mixed timed sets
  • Two targeted weak-area drills
  • One longer General Academic session
  • One review-only session
  • One partial mock or extended simulation

Week 5: simulate the test experience

Goal

Test pacing, concentration and recovery.

Complete at least one substantial timed simulation. Follow the planned sequence without pausing to search for explanations.

Afterwards, classify errors:

A mock is valuable only when it changes the next week's preparation.

Week 6: consolidate, do not panic

Goal

Reduce repeated mistakes and enter test day with a stable routine.

Do not chase every difficult topic or take a full mock every day.

Focus on:

  • the three most frequent error patterns;
  • short timed sets;
  • one final simulation early in the week;
  • reviewing official interface instructions;
  • test-centre logistics; and
  • sleep and travel planning.

The final two days should feel lighter than the middle of the plan.

A weekly timetable for students or working professionals

How to know whether the plan is working

Track three measures:

  1. Accuracy by task type
  2. Median time per question
  3. Repeated-error count

Improvement is not always a dramatic score increase. It can also appear as fewer unanswered questions, more stable pacing and fewer errors of the same kind.

Start with your actual baseline

A six-week schedule should not allocate equal time to every section automatically. A candidate already comfortable with algebra may need more visual reasoning practice. Another candidate may recognise patterns quickly but struggle with dense academic prompts.
