Active Recall and Spaced Repetition for dMAT

Most people prepare for the dMAT by doing more: more practice sets, more hours, more re-reading of material they already half-understand. Effort matters, but how you study decides how much of that effort actually sticks. Two techniques from learning research — active recall and spaced repetition — consistently help people remember and apply what they learn, and they cost nothing to adopt. They will not replace the reasoning practice at the heart of the dMAT, but used well they make the knowledge and methods behind that reasoning far more durable. This article explains what the two techniques are and how to fold them into a dMAT plan without turning your preparation into busywork.

What the two techniques actually are

Active recall is the simple act of retrieving an answer from memory rather than recognising it on the page. When you close the book and try to reconstruct a method, a definition, or the steps of a procedure, you are using active recall. It feels harder than re-reading — and that difficulty is the point. The effort of pulling information out strengthens your ability to pull it out again later, which is exactly what you need under exam pressure. Re-reading, by contrast, produces a comforting sense of familiarity that rarely survives contact with a timed question.

Spaced repetition is the scheduling partner to active recall. Instead of reviewing something once and moving on, you revisit it at growing intervals — a day later, then a few days, then a week or more. Each successful recall pushes the next review further out; each lapse pulls it back in. This spacing fights the natural forgetting curve far more efficiently than cramming, because you spend time on a fact only at the moment you are about to lose it. Together the two techniques answer the two questions that matter most in preparation: how you review (by retrieving) and when you review (just before forgetting).

Where they help on the dMAT — and where they don't

It helps to be honest about scope. A large part of the dMAT is reasoning under time — recognising patterns, working through figures and sequences, solving problems you have never seen in exactly that form. Active recall and spaced repetition are not a substitute for that work.

What they do help with is the layer underneath the reasoning: the methods, rules, and recurring moves you want to be automatic so your attention is free for the actual thinking. The step-by-step approach to a particular figure sequence, the formula rearrangement you keep fumbling, the systematic method for a Latin square, the vocabulary or background knowledge relevant to the general academic module — these are all things you can commit to memory with retrieval and spacing so they no longer cost you time on the day. The goal is not to memorise questions but to make the underlying techniques so familiar that you apply them without hesitation. Your error log is the ideal source of what belongs on this list, because it already records the exact methods you keep missing.

How to build it into a dMAT week

Start small and concrete. After a study session, close your materials and write down, from memory, the key method or idea you just worked on — a few lines is enough. If you can reconstruct it, you have learned it; if you cannot, you have found tomorrow's first review. This single habit turns passive sessions into active ones without adding time.

For the things worth remembering long-term, make brief prompts rather than notes. A prompt is a question with the answer hidden: "What are the three steps for this sequence type?" on one side, the steps on the other. Physical cards work; a spaced-repetition app that schedules reviews for you works too. The tool matters far less than the discipline of answering before you flip. Keep the prompts specific and few — a small, well-chosen deck you actually review beats a large one you abandon.

Then let spacing do its job. Review new prompts the next day, and space out the ones you get right so they return less often, while the ones you miss come back sooner. Ten focused minutes of retrieval most days will outperform a long weekend cram, and it slots naturally into a broader schedule like our six-week study plan.
