For Indian students planning a Master's degree in Germany, the introduction of the digital Master Test has created a new source of confusion: Is dMAT part of APS? Does it replace APS? Can you apply for APS before taking the test?
The simplest answer is:
- APS verifies your academic documents and educational history.
- dMAT measures academic aptitude for selected Master's applicants.
- For affected applicants, the dMAT certificate becomes one document within the APS process.
They are connected, but they are not the same service.
Independent preparation notice: dMAT Prep is not affiliated with or endorsed by APS India, g.a.s.t., dMAT, DAAD or any German university. This article explains publicly available information and offers independent study guidance. Rules and dates can change, so always verify important decisions with the official sources.
What APS India does
APS stands for Akademische Prüfstelle, commonly described in English as the Academic Evaluation Centre. APS India verifies academic qualifications issued by Indian institutions.
Its role is to check whether submitted documents are authentic and whether the stated academic history is formally plausible. APS does not decide whether a German university will admit you, and it does not make the final visa decision.
For many Indian students, the APS certificate is an important part of the German university and student-visa journey.
What dMAT does
The digital Master Test is an academic aptitude assessment administered by g.a.s.t.
For the APS India route, affected candidates take:
- A Core Module, which measures general cognitive and analytical abilities.
- A General Academic Module, which applies those abilities to academic problem-solving situations.
The test is designed to assess reasoning and transfer skills rather than only memorised subject facts.
Who currently needs dMAT for APS India?
Under the introductory rules announced in 2026, the requirement applies to selected Master's applicants whose previous degree falls within:
- Engineering
- Commerce, Accounting, Finance or Economics
- Business or Management
The requirement is connected to applications for the Summer Semester 2027 intake and later Master's intakes, unless an official transitional exemption applies.
Mixed and interdisciplinary degrees can be difficult to classify. A title such as Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering or Engineering Management may require you to check the official affected-fields list rather than relying on the course name alone.
Does dMAT replace APS verification?
No.
APS still verifies the authenticity and formal plausibility of your academic documents. The dMAT result is an additional academic test result for affected applicants.
A strong dMAT score does not remove the need to submit complete APS documents. Likewise, a completed document verification does not remove the dMAT requirement when the current rules say it applies.
Can you submit APS documents before receiving the dMAT certificate?
Yes. APS India states that affected applicants may submit their complete APS application documents before the dMAT certificate becomes available.
This can be useful because APS can begin checking the other documents while you prepare for or wait for the test result.
However, APS cannot issue the final APS certificate until:
- the required dMAT certificate has been submitted; and
- the dMAT result has been checked against information provided by g.a.s.t.
In practical terms, do not wait for the dMAT result before preparing the rest of your APS file.
Does a low dMAT score automatically cause APS rejection?
No. APS India's FAQ says that a low dMAT result does not automatically lead to refusal of the APS certificate.
The dMAT is an additional academic result. APS continues to perform document verification separately.
German universities may decide individually how they use dMAT results in admissions. This means applicants should distinguish between:
- receiving an APS certificate;
- meeting a university's formal entry requirements; and
- being competitive in a university's selection process.
These are related but different questions.
A practical sequence for affected applicants
A sensible workflow is:
- Confirm that your previous degree appears in the official affected-fields list.
- Check whether a transitional exemption applies to your APS procedure.
- Register for the dMAT through the official participant process.
- Prepare all APS documents using the correct graduates/postgraduates checklist.
- Submit the complete APS document package without waiting unnecessarily for the dMAT result.
- Take the dMAT.
- Download the certificate when results are published.
- Submit the certificate to APS using the official instructions.
- Use the completed APS documentation for university and visa processes as required.
Common misunderstandings
“Everyone applying for a German Master's now needs dMAT”
Not under the introductory APS India rules. The requirement applies to selected previous-degree fields and specified intake periods.
“dMAT is an APS interview”
No. It is a standardised digital test administered by g.a.s.t.
“My APS application cannot start until the dMAT result arrives”
APS says the other documents can be submitted earlier. The final certificate, however, waits for the required dMAT certificate.
“APS decides whether a university admits me”
No. Admission decisions remain with universities.
What to do next
Start by checking your eligibility and timeline. Once you know that dMAT applies, preparation should run in parallel with your APS paperwork rather than after it.
