Eligibility appears simple when a degree is clearly labelled Mechanical Engineering, Economics or Business Administration. It becomes more difficult when the programme combines fields.
Common examples include:
- Business Analytics
- Industrial Engineering
- Engineering Management
- Financial Technology
- Data Science
- Information Systems
- Technology Management
- Economics and Mathematics
Do not decide eligibility from one word in the title.

Start with the official affected-fields list
APS India states that the introductory dMAT requirement applies to selected previous-degree fields in:
- Engineering
- Commerce, Accounting, Finance and Economics
- Business and Management
APS also recognises that some programmes fall between categories and instructs applicants to use the official affected-fields list.
The final classification is based on that published list, not on an unofficial interpretation by a prep provider.
Why titles are difficult to classify
Two universities can use similar titles for programmes with very different curricula.
For example:
- one Business Analytics degree may sit inside a management faculty;
- another may be primarily computer science and statistics;
- an Industrial Engineering programme may be classified as engineering;
- a Technology Management programme may be business-focused.
The title alone may not reveal the formal category used by APS.
Information to collect before checking
Prepare:
- the exact degree title on the certificate;
- university name;
- faculty or school;
- official programme description;
- transcript;
- major or specialisation;
- degree level;
- programme duration; and
- year of graduation.
Use the exact wording from official documents.
Do not confuse previous degree and target degree
The current APS India requirement is linked to the field of your previous degree, not simply the Master's programme you hope to enter.
A student with a humanities Bachelor's applying for a business-related Master's may not be classified in the same way as a student whose completed Bachelor's degree is in Business Administration.
Check the official wording for your individual situation.
Transitional exemptions still matter
Even if your degree appears in an affected field, you may be exempt for a completed or earlier APS procedure under the transitional rules.
APS India currently describes exemptions connected to:
- APS online registration before 29 June 2026;
- shipment of complete APS documents before 29 June 2026; or
- an APS certificate already issued for the completed procedure.
Check the exact conditions and retain evidence of relevant registration or shipment dates.
What not to rely on
Avoid making a decision based only on:
- a WhatsApp poll;
- another student's classification;
- a consultant's generic chart;
- an AI answer without the official list;
- the department you plan to apply to; or
- one subject from your transcript.
Similar-looking cases can be classified differently.
How to write a clarification request
When official information does not resolve the case, make your enquiry easy to assess.
Include:
- full name;
- APS application status if applicable;
- exact degree title;
- university;
- graduation year;
- intended Master's intake;
- a concise explanation of why the field is unclear; and
- references to the relevant entry in the official list.
Do not send a long life story or multiple contradictory descriptions.
Example:
My completed degree is “Bachelor of Technology in Industrial Engineering and Management” from [University]. I am applying for a German Master's programme for Summer Semester 2027. Could you confirm whether this previous degree is classified within the affected dMAT fields under the current APS India list?
Use the official contact route and retain the response.
Should you start preparing while waiting?
If your degree has a meaningful chance of being affected and the test date is approaching, light preparation may be sensible while waiting for formal clarification.
Focus first on transferable Core skills:
- visual reasoning;
- equation translation; and
- constraint logic.
Avoid purchasing expensive preparation solely because an unofficial source says you are definitely affected.
Build an evidence folder
Keep:
- the affected-fields list version;
- APS confirmation;
- degree documents;
- programme description;
- registration date;
- shipping proof; and
- participant-portal records.
Rules can be updated, so record which official information you relied on and when.
The safest rule
Use independent tools to understand the process, but use the official APS list and written official guidance to make the final eligibility decision.
